Sad day today, Hostess Brands shut its doors. What this means is no more Twinkies, Hostess Cupcakes or Suzie Q’s. The company has been in a dispute with one of the unions. The company filed a second bankruptcy case in January 2012. Union members went on strike last week after rejecting the companies offer. So now 18,000+ employees have lost their jobs, and Americans have lost Twinkies. No more deep fried Twinkies, no more Twinkies strawberry short cake. I’m sure you will start seeing people selling boxes of Twinkies on Ebay as stores had a run on them today after the news was announced. I loved the Twinkies, the cupcakes, the Suzie Q’s. Growing up it was something special to get one of those for a snack. I will miss them, although my waist will not miss them.
The company warned the union that unless they ended their strike yesterday the company would shut down and liquidate. Well the union did not end their strike, now the union and non union members have no job. Union managers blame mismanagement of the company for the companies financial issues, the company blames the union for not accepting its proposal. I understand a union trying to protect its members, but a job with a lower wage I would think is better than no job.
I don’t know who is right or wrong in this case, what we do know is now 18,000+ people have lost their jobs. The economy is still not very good. Many other companies have announced layoffs since the US elections. Some companies are cutting employees hours to less than 30 hours a week to avoid the health insurance requirements of Obamacare.
We are in a very difficult time, bitter hatred on both sides of the political spectrum. No one seems to be trying to resolve the issues at hand. The President is taking a stubborn stance along with his party. The Republicans are digging their heals in also. Both sides are acting like a**holes. No one seems to be working for the good of the common man. The debt crisis has to be addressed, unemployment needs to be addressed.
In other news, the Biggest Liar Competition is being held in England this week, fortunately for the other contestants no American politician entered.
