Travel Theme-Spooky

Wheresmybackpack’s theme this week is Spooky.  I decided to take that theme in a humorous direction.  Every year for the last 18 years the city of Manitou Springs CO has hosted the Emma Crawford Memorial Coffin Race.  The legend goes that in 1889 Emma Crawford moved to Manitou Springs in hope of alleviating some health issues however she died two years later. In 1929, Emma Crawford’s coffin got dislodged from its resting place and went down Red Mountain ending up in the canyon below, a complete mess of bones and coffin hardware.  The town of Manitou Springs, in an effort to increase tourism during a slow period of the year decided to host a coffin race in Emma Crawford’s honor.  The race is open to 50 teams.  The teams must push the coffin the length of the course, through downtown Manitou Springs, in the coffin must be an Emma Crawford.  Before the race begins there is a parade of hearses and of the participants with their coffin .  My photos for the spooky challenge, is of the participants and coffins from this years race.

  1. How fun! I love places that don’t take themselves so seriously that they can have celebrations like this. Makes me want to move to Colorado! Not that I don’t already want to go west. I want to be near the mountains. Someday…

Love it – what fun this must be.
